It is tempting to ascribe much of the growth in the Chinese economy to innovation in Chinese firms. Some make comparison between the personal networks responsible for so much of Silicon Valley’s innovation and the system of guangxi in China. We find the two systems to be very different, and that innovation in China is concentrated in foreign firm in China rather than in Chinese firms. A survey of Chinese managers will investigate the situation in depth.
