Two consultancies with Sagentia have allowed investigation of technology transfer from UK universities to the outside world. The focus has been on medical technologies. The conclusions are that the simple model of universities providing the information that industry needs is quite inappropriate. Links are often indirect and long-term; personal rather than institutional. Policy that amplifies the simple model can be counter-productive.
